Server replacement: Main server to Local SQL server

Introduction

• Estimated time required depends on the version of Winner Bizz, the size of the database and the bandwidth between shops.
  
  
• If the user needs to replace a primary server to which one or more secondary servers are connected, each secondary server will need to be reinstalled. This process can be time consuming.
  
  
• The first step is to evaluate the size of the database on the primary server. If the user still has access to the primary server, open the Winner Bizz support tool and check the size of the database as shown in the screenshot below:
  
  

If the user cannot open the Winner Bizz support tool, users can also read the database size under Windows in the Compusoft/Winner Bizz/Database folder.

In Winner Bizz, around10% of the database size will be sent to each secondary server. Then, the user must run a tool to evaluate the data transfer speed between the primary server and the secondary server(s).

Note: Users should assume the speed obtained in the test will be around 50% slower, as replication will take longer, as it is not as fast as a simple data transfer.

With the information on speed and data size, users should be able to get an approximate estimate of the time required to reinstall the secondary server(s). 

Note: Users should also consider the time needed to the primary server (about 3 hours).

If the data to be transferred is quite large or the transfer speed is low, the best solution is to place the secondary server(s) on the same network as the primary server during installation.

Data backup

• First, make a backup of the Winner Bizz database of the current server from the Winner Bizz maintenance tool. To create a backup, start Winner Bizz on the primary server and select the menu option Others > Database > Backup.
  Note: To do this, the user must have the Database Backup right.

• In a second step, make a copy of the Compusoft folder to a location on the new server. Copy the Winner Bizz and Winner Design files but without the Winner Bizz directory and Database directory.
  Note: If the user copies the complete Winner Bizz directory, the Database directory will contain the old database and the installation will probably freeze when trying to create the new database because the file will already exist.

Server installation

Proceed to the installation of the new server using the Installation Kit available on our Customer Portal and the attached procedure: Product Download tab (1).
Note: Users can select their preferred language by clicking the drop-down located at the top right of the screen (3).

When installing, choose a Master Server type installation.

Data restoration

Start Winner Bizz by logging in with the user ADMIN and the password ADMIN.

Restore the Winner Bizz SQL database backup on the new server:

• Menu Others > Help and Maintenance > Winner Bizz maintenance tools.
  
  
• Select the Database tab and click Restore Backup.

• Look for the file obtained previously during the backup made on the previous server.
  Copy the Winner Design data from the \compusoft folder on the previous server to the \compusoft folder on the new server.
  
  
• Allow files to be replaced if asked.

Note: To restore Winner Design data on the new server the user must copy the DB folder, found here Compusoft\Winner\DB, from the old server to Compusoft\Winner\ the new server.

Reinstallation of client workstations

Uninstall Winner Bizz from Windows applications and reinstall the application on the client workstations by following the installation guide.

Note: Only necessary if the server name has changed or if the path on the new server is different from the old server.

Secondary server

If there are secondary servers, then:

• Make a backup of the database before installing the new server.

Note: The backup of the secondary database is not used, but can be used to recover data if there is a problem with synchronisation.

• Repeat step 3 of the data backup
  
  
• Check that the server and replicas are synchronised with the primary server. In Winner Bizz, tab Servers > Replication history.
  
  
• Uninstall the secondary server after uninstalling the old primary server but before reinstalling the new primary server.
  
  
• Reinstall the secondary server after reinstalling the primary server
  
  
• Repeat step 5 to restore the data
  
  
• If the new server has a different name from the old server or the path to the Compusoft folder is different from the old server, repeat step 6 on reinstalling the clients.
  
  
• Remove the old server from the list of Winner Bizz servers:
  Other > Database > Servers, select the name of the old server and delete it.
